The Jayride Rideshare Challenge!

The Jayride Challenge, sponsored by Ace Rental Cars

Jayride is taking to the road to prove ridesharing can work for New Zealanders!

Rod Bishop, cofounder of Jayride will take a compact car from Auckland to Queenstown, departing Auckland on 26 January. Jayride will carpool to iconic New Zealand destinations, using every means to find passengers – meeting locals, backpackers and business people, blogging and listing rides on Jayride.co.nz

“If Jayride makes it from Auckland to Queenstown filling spare seats for the whole trip it will show ride-sharing works by proving that kiwis can share any ride they want, whenever they want,” says Rod Bishop.

We also aim to remind kiwis of the great destinations on their doorstep. In tight financial times domestic travel is a cost-saving alternative to overseas holidays, especially when New Zealand’s greatest destinations are now cheaper than ever to reach with Jayride.

The Jayride rideshare road-trip challenge will be blogged straight from the road to you at news.jayride.co.nz. Will we make it? Is ridesharing feasible in New Zealand? We certainly believe so and we’re going to try and prove it!

Jayride’s 10 Top Reasons to Rideshare

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Over the years, lots of people have probably said you should carpool. Perhaps the word carpool even gives you a slightly guilty feeling… You know you should share your travel, but do you know why? You’ll really be helping yourself. Take a look at Jayride’s top ten reasons to rideshare.

1. Save Money on Petrol

If you drive alone you pay 100% of your fuel costs. If you drive with even one passenger you could split fuel 50-50. That’s a 50% saving on your petrol bill, every week. If you spend $50 on petrol per week, you’ll save $1,300 in a year.

2. Reduce Emissions

Driving is the single biggest polluter of all the actions you make. It burns fossil fuels, which produce emissions harmful to our planet. Leave those expensive (dubiously) “green” consumer products in the supermarket. Ridesharing is the biggest action you can take to start greening your life.

3. Drive Faster

Have you sat in traffic and watched other cars fly by in the high occupancy lane? Don’t be jealous, pick up passengers and be that car. Ridesharing will let you drive in transit lanes, saving you hours of driving every week.

4. Have Fun!

Have you ever met someone who loved hitch-hiking? The reason, they’ll tell you, is the people they meet and the stories they tell. Ridesharing is simply more fun than traveling alone. Even if you’re only commuting to work, turn down that radio and bring a little conversation to your morning drive.

5. Have Fewer Heart Attacks!

Driving is stressful, carpooling isn’t! A University of California study shows you are likely to have lower blood pressure if you carpool. Driving requires concentration for hours at a time. If you share driving when ride-sharing it will give you less time at the wheel, less stress, and a healthier heart!

6. Reduce Congestion

Cars = Congestion; Ridesharing = Less Cars. So, Ridesharing = Less Congestion! If you share your transport you’re doing your bit to make rush hour a little bit smoother for everyone.

7. Get Busy

Spend your time more productively than driving. Ever seen people on the bus reading the paper, a novel, doing their makeup, or working on their laptop? That could be you, except in the private comfort of someone-else’s car. Doesn’t that sound better than having to keep your eye on the road?

8. Save Money on Parking

If you’re commuting to the city to work, you know parking is expensive. Split the cost with your passengers for a cheaper day at the office; and the more people who do it, the more parks available too!

9. Free Car Maintenance

If you leave your car at home 50% of the time, that’s 50% less use for your vehicle. 50% less maintenance costs, and 50% less kilometers on the clock. If you’d normally drive 100km every week, you’ll save 13,000kms of use over 5 years. Think of the extra money you’ll make when you sell that car!

10. It’s easy!

And the best reason to rideshare? It’s so easy to get started. Register with Jayride and you can share a ride in just a few clicks. Jayride is free to use and we’ll match you up with other drivers going the same way. There’s never been a better time than now. Visit http://www.jayride.co.nz and we’ll get you started.

Jayride Launches!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Jayride is now live!

Jayride went live today with the import of Hitch.net.nz’s userbase and current ride list. Jayride is now sharing over 20,000 rides from over 1200 members.

We’ve emailed Hitch members to notify them of the change and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We’re really happy to be providing this great service and look forward to helping our members travel cheap and green around NZ!

All rides shared during our private testing phase have been removed. For testers, your accounts remain active, so feel free to log in for real and share your ride on that account.

Finally, Hitch.net.nz the site that started it all has now been taken offline. Hitch was the first successful ride sharing site in NZ, and helped to get us where we are today. We’re sad to see it go, but looking forward to a bright (green) future with Jayride.
